Visiting Florida can be overwhelming. It takes over 13 hours to get from the most western part of the panhandle to the southernmost part of the state, Key West. That’s why I think it’s important to point out unique things to do in the state, not only for visitors but also for residents who haven’t explored outside of their immediate areas.

How I Got To Florida

I moved to South Florida as a child. It was a bit of a shock for a kid from the Hudson Valley in New York, but I loved having a pool and that we could wear shorts in the winter. I also liked the unique things in the Sunshine State. Don’t get me wrong – I begged to go to Disney World and EPCOT a lot. But the alligator farms, a family trip to Sanibel Island, going to fairs and museums in school and being able to ride my bike to the beach as a teen were an experience.

That could be where I got the idea for this blog. I understood that there’s more here than the amusement parks and people who flew to the Orlando area but didn’t go anywhere else were missing out on a lot. Having lived in various parts of the state over the years, I wanted to share those ideas. There’s always something to explore!

Things To Do In Florida

So, I created a .pdf of 21 unique things to do in Florida. I broke the state into three parts: North , Central  and Southern.

Note that the way I broke down the state isn’t the descriptors that residents would use. But I had to break it down to make it understandable. So, what I’m calling North is everything north of Ocala, east or west coast. Central is just north of Orlando, east to west, down to just south of Sarasota. And Southern is everything south of Central. Notice I said Southern Florida instead of South Florida. South Florida means the three southernmost counties on the east coast and the Keys. Technically, Naples isn’t part of that grouping. However, that all can be very confusing to visitors, so I just included everything in the state’s southern portion.

What’s on the list? There are several state parks, museums, lots of water activities and even bison in the wild! Whether it’s your first visit to Florida or you’re a resident of the Sunshine State, you’ll want to see this list and start your adventures.

Where To Stay

The great thing about being a state that survives on tourism is that in all but the tiniest towns, there’s somewhere to stay whether it’s in a hotel or in a Vrbo home rental. Hotels in Florida run in a variety of price and luxury levels.

Note that some hotels, especially in Orlando, Key West and Miami, will charge you a ‘resort fee’ to stay there. It’s an extra fee for having ammenities such as gyms or high-end pools. Also be aware of parking fees that may appear on your bill in these areas as well.
