From the time Spanish explorers first arrived, African descendants have helped build the state. To recognize these contributions,\u00a0the Florida Black Heritage Trail was created by the state&#8217;s visitors bureau. This African American museum visitors understand how Black Floridians lived during those times.<\/p>\n<h4>Julee Cottage Museum<\/h4>\n<p>The last example of &#8220;to the sidewalk&#8221; construction in Pensacola, the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/historicpensacola.org\/plan-your-visit\/museums-properties\/julee-cottage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julee Cottee Museum<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is an example of Creole building. In 1923, a white woman accused a Black man of assaulting her. White mobs from Sumner, Gainesville and even parts of Georgia terrorized the town for a week, killing Black people and burning the entire town. Some residents escaped by hiding in the woods. Eventually the land became the first free Black settlement in North America. Now a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycornacopia.com\/visiting-florida-state-parks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida State Park<\/a>,Fort Mose hosts a yearly<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myfloridahistory.org\/frontiers\/article\/79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">festival<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and has a museum, kayaking, picnic areas and bird watching.<\/p>\n<h4>The Curtis Museum<\/h4>\n<p>A research center studying Black life in Pinellas County,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/curtismuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Curtis Museum<\/a>\u00a0is located in Clearwater. In addition to a permanent exhibit, there are traveling exhibits and archives for study.<\/p>\n<h4>Dr. Carter G. Located out front of the museum there&#8217;s also the city&#8217;s\u00a0street mural that supports Black Lives Matter.<\/p>\n<h4>Wells&#8217; Built Museum of African American History &amp; Culture<\/h4>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellsbuilt.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wells&#8217; Built Museum<\/a> is a tribute to Dr. William Monroe Wells, who developed venues and hotels in the Parramore neighborhood. In addition to rare slave records, the museum has art work, an original Negro Leagues jersey and furniture from the 1930&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<h4>Harry T. &amp; Harriette V. Moore Cultural Center<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_1750\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1750\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mycornacopia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Harry-Harriette-Moore-Memorial-Park_visitspacecoast.jpg\" alt=\"Harry and Harriette Moore Memorial Park, Mims FL\" width=\"725\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/luxedesignlab.ca\/cornacopiamarketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Harry-Harriette-Moore-Memorial-Park_visitspacecoast.jpg 725w, https:\/\/luxedesignlab.ca\/cornacopiamarketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Harry-Harriette-Moore-Memorial-Park_visitspacecoast-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of VisitSpaceCoast.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Civil rights leaders in Brevard County, Harry and Harriette Moore were teachers in the area and worked with the NAACP to register African-Americans to vote. On Christmas Day, 1951, a bomb went off under their bedroom, murdering them both.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harryharriettemoore.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cultural Center<\/a> features a replica of their home in Mims in the exact location of the original house. A National Historic Landmark, the home contains original furnishings and papers from Bethune&#8217;s achieves.
